How do I work with folders and files on my website?

WARNING: Do not delete, edit, or move any files or folders than you have not personally created. This may damage the contents and functionality of your website!

Creating a Folder on the cPanel Server

1. After logging in, click on the "File Manager" icon. This is where all of the directories and files reside on the server.

2. When adding a file, you will want to place that into a folder to keep items well organized on the website. Click the link to "Create New Folder".

3. In the upper right of the screen, type the name for your new folder and click "Create".

NOTE: When naming files or folders, do not include any spaces. Utilize an underscore or dash if it is necessary to break up words. (i.e. A folder named: "my images". Do not enter "my images" as the name. Rather, enter either "my-images" or "my_images".)

Uploading a File to the Server

1. On the left side of the screen is a listing of all of the folders within the site. Open the folder that you just created by clicking the icon next to that folder.

2. Click the "Upload file(s)" link.

3. Browse for the file that you wish to upload. (In this example, we selected the index.html file)

4. Click the "Upload" button.

5. The next screen will list the files that were just uploaded. (Notice that the example index.html file is now listed here).

Linking to a File on the Server

1. To link to one of your files via the internet, you will need to:

  • Enter your website URL (i.e. www.cornerstonewebsites.com) followed by
  • A backslash and the folder that your file resides in (i.e. /folder) followed by
  • A backslash and the file that resides within that folder (i.e. /index.html)

In this case, our URL would look like: www.cornerstonewebsites.com/folder/index.html.

Deleting or Editing a File or Folder on the cPanel Server

1. Click the name of the file or folder that you wish to edit or delete.

2. On the right side of the screen, choose what you would like to do with the file or folder. In this case, we deleted the folder named "folder" and all files that resided under it.
